USING YOUR CHIMNEY / STOVE SAFELY – ADVICE

Click each question to view the answer.

How often should I have my chimney swept?

At least once a year for smokeless fuels, and every 3–6 months for wood-burning stoves depending on usage.

What are the warning signs my chimney needs cleaning?

Smoke entering the room, poor stove draw, strong smells, or soot falling into the firebox.

Why is chimney maintenance important?

It prevents soot and creosote build-up, which can cause dangerous chimney fires and reduce efficiency.

Can bird nests block a chimney?

Yes. They can fully block flues and cause dangerous carbon monoxide risks.

Do I need a carbon monoxide detector?

Yes. A carbon monoxide detector is essential for safety, especially if you have gas appliances or a chimney. I can also provide installation services for CO detectors and correct positioning of your detector.
